Green apples

Aside from chayote squash, nothing tastes like grass without actually eating lawn clippings like a green apple. Charming that they are called “Granny Smith Apples" — it conjures up the image of a belovedly sourpuss old lady with thick glasses and an armful of award-winning apple pie. I’ve always wondered who this Granny Smith is, and why she rated top-tier apple nomenclature.

I guess if I had the position, I would also name an apple after my grandmother. A tangy, grassy, sort of sweet but sort of sharp taste. Like her good advice — firm but fair, and ages well with time. I think it’s an apt name for an apple, and one that I really enjoy. I could eat green apples any day and especially in the morning — that refreshing zing is so great with a rich cup of coffee first thing in the morning.
